An Attitude of Gratitude Day 26



Although I missed yesterday, I wanted to do one last Attitude of Gratitude Post on Thanksgiving Day. Looking back over my list from the month, I can't help but feel overwhelmed at the amount of things I have to be thankful for. Some were silly, some were serious, but never did I list every single thing that I had to be thankful for that day. A dear friend said that she is thankful that she has so many things to be thankful for and that is just how I feel!

Even in spite of all the things that happened in the past month, I am so blessed - I have an amazing husband who takes care of me; wonderful children who bless me with smiles, help, hugs, conversation, etc.; health; shelter; provision; family; friends; church family; a relationship with God full of promises. And those are just to name a few. Thank you for those of you who went on this journey with me - I had fun and pray that you did too and that you were blessed. Here is something I read to help you feel better about the trip we just made:

Some researchers found that grateful people report higher levels of positive emotions, more satisfaction with life, and more vitality and optimism. All good qualities I want more of in my life. They also found grateful people show lower levels of depression and stress - two things I'd like to experience less in my life.

What's more, they found that people who write weekly in a journal about things they are thankful for are healthier. They exercise more regularly, report fewer physical symptoms, and feel better in general than people who journal about neutral or negative life events. That sounds great, and I'll take all the help I can get in the exercise department.

Finally, the research showed that people who daily count their blessings report higher levels of alertness, enthusiasm, determination, and energy.

Wow, the benefits of being grateful are remarkable and many! I guess that shouldn't surprise us when we realize that it is what God tells us to do in the first place! Maybe that's why we enter His gates with Thanksgiving - we are less depressed, healthier and have more energy making it easier to enter His presence! He really does know what He is talking about, His word is true and His promises are sure.

On a final note that I had to put in, have you ever read George Washington's Thanksgiving proclamation? It tells much of where our country came from and, though I don't want to get into politics, it is so meaningful that I had to share some of it.

"Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me to "recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:

Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

Hmmm... I'll just leave that for you to consider.

I pray that your Thanksgiving was truly wonderful, blessed indeed and filled with good things and those you love. As we go into the season of celebrating His birth, don't forget to continue to give thanks in all things, at all times!

An Attitude of Gratitude Day 24



I read something today that was so true. This is my take on it. When we get the unexpected check in the mail or a need is miraculously met, it is easy to give thanks. On time provision? Thank you Jesus! Healing? Thank you Jesus! Answered prayer? Thank you Jesus! But, what about the times when the answer that we think should come, doesn't? Are we able to still say Thank you Jesus in spite of our circumstances? I have had one of those weeks (well, months if you want to get technical!) where I have had so many weird things happen that I find myself looking around to see if someone from Candid Camera is following me around! No kidding! I have truly felt like someone was either playing a joke on me or they were just waiting to see if I would still be thankful if ________ happened. Well, I have made up my mind that irregardless of circumstances, answers, silence, WHATEVER - I will be thankful and content in all things. Because it really boils down to a choice of my will. I chose to be thankful when I don't see the provision, when I don't hear His voice, when I don't know the answer. And I can do that, not because there is anything special about me. It is because I trust my God to keep His promises, to take care of me and my family, to meet our needs and to never leave me or forsake me. It truly is about Him and not about me.

So, now that I have gotten that off my chest, here is what I am most thankful for today!

The librarian who finally chose to be kind to me today.

Registering for classes to renew my teaching degree - I am actually excited!

Answered prayers - even the ones that weren't answered the way I thought they should be.

The turkey defrosted!

Homeschooling.

Being a mom - the greatest, most underpaid job in the world - unless of course you count those eternal rewards, hugs, smiles, bonding - never mind, I am grossly overpaid when you think about it!

Oopppssss! I somehow missed this on my "to-do" list last night. No wonder I got so many other things done!! So, here goes my list for day 23:

Shopping with my children.

Finding good deals.

Health.

A good school day.

Knowing that God works all things for my good if I love Him.

Laundry that is washed, dried, folded and put away.

Conversations with my husband.

An Attitude of Gratitude Day 22



The last weekend before Thanksgiving has come and now gone and I hope and pray that anyone who has been reading along with me feels too blessed to be stressed and has a permanent attitude of gratitude that you carry with you for the rest of your life. One day to be thankful and show it is just not enough! Today, I am thankful for:

My puppy - Maggie. She is 2 today! Happy Birthday puppy!!

An over the top church that has leadership who stand for truth and are not afraid to teach it, no matter what is "in" to say.

Truth.

Sunday School Teachers who love my children and give of themselves to minister to them and reach their hearts for God.

The unconditional love of God.

MaKenna's Braces

Two years ago, our dentist referred MaKenna to an orthodontist for a consultation about braces due to several issues going on in her mouth. She has some crowding, an overbite, an overjet and a few other things. Well, unfortunately, braces were just not in the budget at the time and had to be put on hold. During that time, we knew that Mark was finishing a job and began to pray that a.) he would get a bonus for the job (even in these times - not easy) and b.) that it would be enough to cover her braces. Well, lo and behold, he did get a bonus AND it was enough to cover her treatment in full! What an amazing blessing. He is an on time God!

So, Thursday was Makenna's big day. Bright and early, at 7AM we arrived at the office. She was a little nervous so we talked and prayed and laughed a tlittle, too. It took a little over an hour, but here she is, as adorable as can be:



She will have to have them on for about 2 years and we are excited to see what she will look like when it is all said and done. For now, we are getting through one day at a time!

An Attitude of Gratitude Day 21



My family and I spent the day at home putting away all of our fall decor and putting out our Christmas decor. It is always so fun to pull things out of boxes and "remember when" and go through the thoughts that those ornaments, decor or whatever bring to mind. The stories those boxes hold are amazing and wonderful because they were shared with people I love through the years and through many circumstances and situations. No matter what may have been going on at the time - finances, stress, work, births, deaths, etc. - it's funny that none of those things are the things we talk about as what we remember the most about that particular item. Kind of makes me think. Maybe the things that I am concerned about now really aren't that important in light of the memories I have the chance to make with my loved ones. Maybe those are the things that I should spend the most time concentrating on and let the other things in God's hands - the best place for them to be anyway!

I have much more to be thankful for than any blog could contain! But, now that I am decorated for Christmas, it is hard to remember that we haven't even had Thanksgiving yet! I love to decorate early for Christmas and have it there to enjoy for more than just a couple of weeks, so that is my first item on my list today:

Christmas decorations.

Homemade eggnog that turned out absolutely heavenly!

Pizza for dinner - no cooking or cleanup required.

Children who get excited about the same things that we do and enjoy doing things as a family.

Snowmen.

I read this quote today on one of my little inspirational flip calendars: "Were there no God we would be in this glorious world with grateful hearts and no one to thank." (Christina Rossetti) I am so glad that I know who my blessings come from!

Only one more week to go - I can almost taste the pumpkin pie! I can't help but love this time of the year. It truly is "The most wonderful time of the year!" Here are my thankful items today:

An Attitude of Gratitude Day 18



I found this story today and it inspired me, so I decided to share it with all of you! Hopefully it will bless you as it did me.

THE SHIPWRECK

The only survivor of a shipwreck was washed up on a small, uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly for God to rescue him, and every day he scanned the horizon for help, but none seemed forthcoming.

Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of driftwood to protect him from the elements and to store his few possessions. But then one day, after scavenging for food, he arrived home to find his little hut in flames, the smoke rolling up to the sky.

The worst had happened; everything was lost. He was stunned with grief and anger. “God, how could you do this to me!” he cried. Early the next day, however, he was awakened by the sound of a ship that was approaching the island. It had come to rescue him. “How did you know I was here?” asked the weary man of his rescuers. “We saw your smoke signal,” they replied.

It is easy to get discouraged when things are going badly. But we shouldn’t lose heart, because God is at work in our lives, even in the midst of pain and suffering. Remember, next time your little hut is burning to the ground–it just may be a smoke signal that summons The Grace of God.

Today, I have so much to be thankful for, as always!

An Attitude of Gratitude Day 17



I read something today that really brought these moments of thankfulness to a new perspective for me. Do you ever feel like Thanksgiving Day has become a "thank you note" to God before we go back to our busy schedules? Thankfully, God pours out His blessings on us each day and not just occasionally. I am so thankful that He "daily loads me with benefits." Giving thanks is a gift not just to the person being thanked, but we give ourselves a gift when we show gratitude as well. Our load feels a little lighter, our steps have a little more bounce and our smiles grow when we show thankfulness. Try it and see for yourself! Meanwhile, here is my list for today.

My Bible - it is so worn, almost falling apart, and has writing and highlighting all throughout it, but I love that Bible.

An Attitude of Gratitude Day 16



Life is so busy for all of us. When I started these posts, I really thought "how easy this will be to make a quick post each evening." Boy, was I wrong! I have to make myself make the time to make this happen! But I am so glad that I have done it. In spite of the craziness of life - friends coming to town, dr.'s appointments, dentist appointments, orthodontist appointments, schooling 3 children, pets, roommate seeking for my dad, KC, quizzing, daily household chores (it never ends) - I still have so much to be thankful for and looking for it helps me to see it, to keep it at the front of my mind. Here are my thoughts for today:

Monday is over!

Cooperation at the dentist office - by the staff!

Warm brownies with ice cream.

Joy unspeakable.

Forgiveness from my children.

A relationship with my children that gets closer every day.

My amazing, hard working husband.

Standing firm on the old adage of "better late than never," here is my day 15 of my thankfulness lists!:

An Attitude of Gratitude Day 10



Well, here we are at day 10 heading toward Thanksgiving day. I am not sure if it is just because Thanksgiving is coming, but there is so much talk going on these days about not just bringing our needs to God - but to bring ourselves to Him, to worship Him, not for what He does for us, but just for who He is. Sometimes, it is so easy to get caught up in the woes of life and all that we need that we forget to just stand back and take the time to see our blessings and then acknowledge the blessing giver. I guess that is the root of why I am doing this for this month. I just want to get back to remembering and seeing the little, every day blessings that tend to get lost in the shuffle of my hectic life. I am so thankful that some of you have joined me each day in the comments!!! That is going to start off my blessings for today:

An Attitude of Gratitude Day 9



Today I am so especially thankful that Mondays only come once a week! Here's how my week started - Somehow, I misunderstood the date for the kids dentist appointments and thought we had to be there by 8 AM today. We were there with time to spare, only to find out that the appointment was not for today - it is for next Monday! Oh, dear! In spite of that, I still have so much to be thankful for today, so here goes...

Knowledge that God works all things for my good.

A full day of school work done.

The library - free DVD rentals are awesome!

Friends who know me as I am but love me anyway!

Blessings of all sizes, shapes and colors.

My relationship with Jesus - without Him, I am nothing.

Ice cream.

Deep conversations with my husband and children - such fun!

That I may be in this world, but I am NOT of it!

The 95 year old man who bagged my groceries at Publix today - he was so sweet and lively that he blessed my day.

Are you starting to feel ready for Thanksgiving yet? Let's not save our gratitude for one day out of 365 - we need to practice thankfulness every day! What are you thankful for today, the 8th day of November? We are so blessed in our country - in spite of what the media would have us believe! Today was an awesome day! Change of plans last minute meant a day at home with my family - that NEVER happens! I have so much to be thankful for today so let's get started!

Having the windows open with a breeze blowing all through the house all day.

Christmas music.

Crossing things off the to-do list.

Organization.

Daughters who love to bake and fill my house with yummy smells - Apple Butter, homemade bread, Pumpkin Dessert - MMMMMM!

Family time.

A hard working husband.

Today I am thankful that:

His mercies are new everyday.
I have the most amazing friends - Jesus knew just who I needed.
I am able to learn from my children and see God reflected in them.
My Thursday night Ladies Prayer Group - these are some of the most amazing, inspiring, sensitive women on the planet.
Peace that passes all understanding.
God's touch and His presence in prayer tonight.
KC starts in a week and a half!
Coupons and sales.
My puppy.
Laundry hanging on the line - there is nothing like the smell of clothes that have been hung out.
Workouts.
Church leadership.
People who lovingly and willingly invest their lives in my children - just because they can.

My thankful list for November 4, 2009:

An amazing Pastor who continues to teach us the truth of God's Word.
The never changing, forever settled Word of God that is as alive today as it was 2000 years ago.
A great checkup for my dad at his Heart appointment today.
Provision.
An on time God.
Homeschooling.
Family.
Leftovers.
Great deals.
Homemade bread and the yummy smell that fills the house while it is baking.

It's funny - the more you think about gratitude, the more that it just kind of finds you everywhere you turn! I never want to cease to be thankful everyday - not just one set aside day a year. If we are to enter into His courts with Thanksgiving, shouldn't we want to be thankful everyday, all day?

Ok, I have come to the conclusion that coming up with one thing each day is so not going to work for me! How do I limit my thankfulness when it is bubbling up inside of me??!! And, for that matter, why should I? So, in no particular order, here are the things I am thankful for today:

My 3 amazing children.
Awesome friends.
Overall good news at the kids dentist appointments today.
Lunch with my kids at Chick Fil A (for almost free).
Going to Publix and spending $33 while saving $85.
Christmas songs.
Seeing my husband do what he does best as reported in the Orlando Sentinel.
Homecooked dinners.
The presence of God at the end of choir practice tonight.
Great deals at the thrift store.
Ice cream.

Well, I truly could go on, but those are on my mind right now as the tops for today! I shall continue tomorrow.

An Attitude of Gratitude Days 1 & 2

Contentment is a notion that has truly become foreign in our culture. I know how to be content and grateful when things are going well, the bills are all paid, the freezer is well stocked, etc. But is that what true contentment is? Or, is it as Paul said in Philippians 4:12 – “I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. In whatever state you find yourself be ye content.” True contentment is not affected by circumstances - it means simply that we know Who is in control even when everything around us seems to be spiraling out of control - and trusting Him with the outcome.

I have decided to try my best to post something each day between now and Thanksgiving that I am truly thankful for as a way to keep me focused on the truly important things. We are coming into a very busy season and my calendar is already full of so many things that my family and I treasure doing to celebrate. While these things are good and meaningful, so often they too can crowd out our ability to be thankful - in all things! Before I start out (and catch up for yesterday!), I want to start with this little poem that helps put things in perspective:

I am thankful for...

bills to pay because it means I have financial provision.

dirty dishes because it means I have food to eat.

taxes because it means I am employed.

dirty laundry because it means I have clothes to wear.

the mess to clean up after a party because it means I have been surrounded by friends.

the pool pump that needs fixing and the lawn that needs mowing, because it means I have a home.

for this bathroom, complete with all the splattered mirrors, soggy, grimy towels and dirty lavatory - they are so convenient.

the power bill, because it means I am warm .

the space I find at the far end of the parking lot, because it means I can walk.

the person who sings off-key behind me in church, because it means I can hear.

our government, because it means we have freedom of speech.

the alarm that goes off in the morning because it means I am alive.

unmade beds - they were so warm and comfortable last night.

even for that slamming screen door. My kids are healthy and able to run and play.

a loving Savior who forgives my sins and makes me whole!

He has richly blessed my family.

"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 1 Thess. 5:16-18 (ESV)


Sometimes, just looking at things from a different perspective makes all the difference!


So, Day 1. I am thankful to know that if I fear God, I do not need to fear anything else because:


1. The Bible will still have all the answers.

2. Prayer will still work.

3. The Holy Spirit will still move.

4. God will still inhabit the praises of His people.

5. There will still be singing of praises to God.

6. God will still pour out blessings upon His people.

7. There will still be room at the Cross.

8. Jesus will still love you.

9. Jesus will still save the lost.


It is so good to know the goodness of God and His blessings. Nothing that happens in this world can change that!


Day 2 - The blessing of my husband. Through good and bad, ups and downs, twists and turns, we make each other laugh, comfort each other, forgive each other, and love each other through it all. God truly provided that man that He knew was just right for me.
