DPP Day 4

Yesterday, our co-op group went on a field trip to Canine Companions for Independence.

While we were there, we learned so much about what their program is and what they offer to the community. How fun would it be to be a "puppy trainer" and be a part of raising a dog to be a companion to someone in need? Anyone with time and patience can do it! After they are with their training family for about a year, they are brought back to CCI for 6-9 months of training with a professional where they learn all the specifics of how to help someone with a handicap. The trainers work with the dogs while sitting in a wheel chair making sure they can follow their commands and do what is needed:

I was happy to know that the dogs to get some "down time" to just play and have fun. They have a playground area where they get to run around. Notice the slide with the dog on it? They seemed to love this equipment!

What a surprise when a few of the dogs noticed the children watching them and came over to say hello! We wondered if they were thinking "Oh goody, they brought children for us to watch today!"

It was neat to know that after all of their training, qualified families do not have to pay anything for their dog. What a blessing that must be for them! December is off to a great, busy start!

My history instructor is a trainer and she shares stories with us during class sometimes. She has little fluffy white doggies and they are so cute and well-behaved.

It's so wonderful to see what they do to help the children and the elderly.

Your blog looks so cute!

Love you!
