No Excuses

My Pastor preached an awesome message today.  I can't even begin to put it into words here or to tell how it impacted me, but the basics were: We need to keep our focus on the blessings of God (as opposed to our circumstances surrounding us) because God wants to bless us.  He gives us a choice - choose life and be blessed!  Nothing can stand in the way of the promises of God - what a promise that is to kick off the new year!

I am so thankful to start another new year knowing the truth, having forgiveness and living for Him with my whole heart.  I can't imagine living in this crazy world without Him!  So, all of that got me thinking, why in the world would you NOT want the blessings of God in your life??  Isn't that silly to think about? It made me remember an article I read a while back.  After searching for it and finding it, I reread it and found it just as fitting and thought provoking as the first time I stumbled upon it.

The article begins by talking about the author's love of sports.  I'm not even sure why I kept reading, because I do not have a love of sports!  However, I read on and truly enjoyed the analogy.  The point of the article is that we shouldn't give more enthusiasm to anything than we give to God.  And so many times, we make excuses when it comes to God and church and commitment to either - so much so that we remove the blessings waiting for us on the other side- and we wouldn't consider making those same excuses for other things!  Here is an excerpt of the article:

"I've often wondered what would happen if people were as intense and committed and determined about church as they are about sports—or any number of other pastimes. This was reinforced some years back in a Moody Monthly piece that illustrated twelve excuses a fella might use for "quitting sports." The analogy isn't hard to figure out.
Every time I went, they asked me for money.
The people with whom I had to sit didn't seem very friendly.
The seats were too hard and not comfortable.
The coach never came to call on me.
The referee made a decision with which I could not agree.
I was sitting with some hypocrites—they came only to see what others were wearing.
Some games went into overtime, and I was late getting home.
The band played numbers that I had never heard before.
The games are scheduled when I want to do other things.
My parents took me to too many games when I was growing up.
Since I read a book on sports, I feel that I know more than the coaches anyhow.
I don't want to take my children, because I want them to choose for themselves what sport they like best.
I've come up with a few more:
The parking lot was awful . . . I had to walk six blocks to the stadium.
Nobody came up and introduced himself to me . . . very impersonal, also loud!
The public address and lighting systems don't suit me.
It's always too hot (or cold) in the stadium.
Enough said. Think it over."

What if 2011 was the year of no excuses?  What would God do for us if we were willing to worship Him and serve Him with the same enthusiasm we gave to our hobbies?  I for one am willing to stand on His promises and find out.  Who wants to come along on the journey?

Through the Eyes of a Child - DPP day 2

Christmas never meant so much to me as it did after I had children. Every year, seeing the sights of the season through their eyes is the most joyful thing in the world. I love that we still wonder in the excitement of it all together, even as they start to grow up. We love to just have some fun no matter what we are doing - like decorating for Christmas:

An Attitude of Gratitude Day 26

Although I missed yesterday, I wanted to do one last Attitude of Gratitude Post on Thanksgiving Day. Looking back over my list from the month, I can't help but feel overwhelmed at the amount of things I have to be thankful for. Some were silly, some were serious, but never did I list every single thing that I had to be thankful for that day. A dear friend said that she is thankful that she has so many things to be thankful for and that is just how I feel!

Even in spite of all the things that happened in the past month, I am so blessed - I have an amazing husband who takes care of me; wonderful children who bless me with smiles, help, hugs, conversation, etc.; health; shelter; provision; family; friends; church family; a relationship with God full of promises. And those are just to name a few. Thank you for those of you who went on this journey with me - I had fun and pray that you did too and that you were blessed. Here is something I read to help you feel better about the trip we just made:

Some researchers found that grateful people report higher levels of positive emotions, more satisfaction with life, and more vitality and optimism. All good qualities I want more of in my life. They also found grateful people show lower levels of depression and stress - two things I'd like to experience less in my life.

What's more, they found that people who write weekly in a journal about things they are thankful for are healthier. They exercise more regularly, report fewer physical symptoms, and feel better in general than people who journal about neutral or negative life events. That sounds great, and I'll take all the help I can get in the exercise department.

Finally, the research showed that people who daily count their blessings report higher levels of alertness, enthusiasm, determination, and energy.

Wow, the benefits of being grateful are remarkable and many! I guess that shouldn't surprise us when we realize that it is what God tells us to do in the first place! Maybe that's why we enter His gates with Thanksgiving - we are less depressed, healthier and have more energy making it easier to enter His presence! He really does know what He is talking about, His word is true and His promises are sure.

On a final note that I had to put in, have you ever read George Washington's Thanksgiving proclamation? It tells much of where our country came from and, though I don't want to get into politics, it is so meaningful that I had to share some of it.

"Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me to "recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:

Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shown kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand, at the city of New York, the 3d day of October, A.D. 1789."

Hmmm... I'll just leave that for you to consider.

I pray that your Thanksgiving was truly wonderful, blessed indeed and filled with good things and those you love. As we go into the season of celebrating His birth, don't forget to continue to give thanks in all things, at all times!

"Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving." Colossians 2:7

An Attitude of Gratitude Day 24

I read something today that was so true. This is my take on it. When we get the unexpected check in the mail or a need is miraculously met, it is easy to give thanks. On time provision? Thank you Jesus! Healing? Thank you Jesus! Answered prayer? Thank you Jesus! But, what about the times when the answer that we think should come, doesn't? Are we able to still say Thank you Jesus in spite of our circumstances? I have had one of those weeks (well, months if you want to get technical!) where I have had so many weird things happen that I find myself looking around to see if someone from Candid Camera is following me around! No kidding! I have truly felt like someone was either playing a joke on me or they were just waiting to see if I would still be thankful if ________ happened. Well, I have made up my mind that irregardless of circumstances, answers, silence, WHATEVER - I will be thankful and content in all things. Because it really boils down to a choice of my will. I chose to be thankful when I don't see the provision, when I don't hear His voice, when I don't know the answer. And I can do that, not because there is anything special about me. It is because I trust my God to keep His promises, to take care of me and my family, to meet our needs and to never leave me or forsake me. It truly is about Him and not about me.

So, now that I have gotten that off my chest, here is what I am most thankful for today!

The librarian who finally chose to be kind to me today.

Registering for classes to renew my teaching degree - I am actually excited!

Answered prayers - even the ones that weren't answered the way I thought they should be.

The turkey defrosted!

Homeschooling.

Being a mom - the greatest, most underpaid job in the world - unless of course you count those eternal rewards, hugs, smiles, bonding - never mind, I am grossly overpaid when you think about it!

"But godliness with contentment is great gain."
1 Timothy 6:6

An Attitude of Gratitude Day 22

The last weekend before Thanksgiving has come and now gone and I hope and pray that anyone who has been reading along with me feels too blessed to be stressed and has a permanent attitude of gratitude that you carry with you for the rest of your life. One day to be thankful and show it is just not enough! Today, I am thankful for:

My puppy - Maggie. She is 2 today! Happy Birthday puppy!!

An over the top church that has leadership who stand for truth and are not afraid to teach it, no matter what is "in" to say.

An Attitude of Gratitude Day 21

My family and I spent the day at home putting away all of our fall decor and putting out our Christmas decor. It is always so fun to pull things out of boxes and "remember when" and go through the thoughts that those ornaments, decor or whatever bring to mind. The stories those boxes hold are amazing and wonderful because they were shared with people I love through the years and through many circumstances and situations. No matter what may have been going on at the time - finances, stress, work, births, deaths, etc. - it's funny that none of those things are the things we talk about as what we remember the most about that particular item. Kind of makes me think. Maybe the things that I am concerned about now really aren't that important in light of the memories I have the chance to make with my loved ones. Maybe those are the things that I should spend the most time concentrating on and let the other things in God's hands - the best place for them to be anyway!

I have much more to be thankful for than any blog could contain! But, now that I am decorated for Christmas, it is hard to remember that we haven't even had Thanksgiving yet! I love to decorate early for Christmas and have it there to enjoy for more than just a couple of weeks, so that is my first item on my list today:

Christmas decorations.

Homemade eggnog that turned out absolutely heavenly!

Pizza for dinner - no cooking or cleanup required.

Children who get excited about the same things that we do and enjoy doing things as a family.

Snowmen.

I read this quote today on one of my little inspirational flip calendars: "Were there no God we would be in this glorious world with grateful hearts and no one to thank." (Christina Rossetti) I am so glad that I know who my blessings come from!

"Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: the upright shall dwell in thy presence." Psalm 140:3

An Attitude of Gratitude Day 18

I found this story today and it inspired me, so I decided to share it with all of you! Hopefully it will bless you as it did me.

THE SHIPWRECK

The only survivor of a shipwreck was washed up on a small, uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly for God to rescue him, and every day he scanned the horizon for help, but none seemed forthcoming.

Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of driftwood to protect him from the elements and to store his few possessions. But then one day, after scavenging for food, he arrived home to find his little hut in flames, the smoke rolling up to the sky.

The worst had happened; everything was lost. He was stunned with grief and anger. “God, how could you do this to me!” he cried. Early the next day, however, he was awakened by the sound of a ship that was approaching the island. It had come to rescue him. “How did you know I was here?” asked the weary man of his rescuers. “We saw your smoke signal,” they replied.

It is easy to get discouraged when things are going badly. But we shouldn’t lose heart, because God is at work in our lives, even in the midst of pain and suffering. Remember, next time your little hut is burning to the ground–it just may be a smoke signal that summons The Grace of God.

Today, I have so much to be thankful for, as always!

Good reports.

Extra time.

Kid's Connection + IMPACT = AMAZING!

B-E-A-U-tiful sunset on the way to church.

Inspiring stories and verses that come right on time.

Energy to keep on keepin on even when my get up and go seems to have got up and went.

I am making it through this amazingly crazy, hectic month and seem to still be in one piece!

"So we thy people and sheep of thy pasture will give thee thanks for ever: we will shew forth thy praise to all generations."
Psalm 79:13

An Attitude of Gratitude Day 17

I read something today that really brought these moments of thankfulness to a new perspective for me. Do you ever feel like Thanksgiving Day has become a "thank you note" to God before we go back to our busy schedules? Thankfully, God pours out His blessings on us each day and not just occasionally. I am so thankful that He "daily loads me with benefits." Giving thanks is a gift not just to the person being thanked, but we give ourselves a gift when we show gratitude as well. Our load feels a little lighter, our steps have a little more bounce and our smiles grow when we show thankfulness. Try it and see for yourself! Meanwhile, here is my list for today.

My Bible - it is so worn, almost falling apart, and has writing and highlighting all throughout it, but I love that Bible.

Tanning in the middle of November.

Accomplishing a lot in a day.

KC starts tomorrow.

Words of wisdom straight from God.

Quiet time.

"Bless the Lord O my soul, and forget not all His benefits."
Psalm 103:2

An Attitude of Gratitude Day 16

Life is so busy for all of us. When I started these posts, I really thought "how easy this will be to make a quick post each evening." Boy, was I wrong! I have to make myself make the time to make this happen! But I am so glad that I have done it. In spite of the craziness of life - friends coming to town, dr.'s appointments, dentist appointments, orthodontist appointments, schooling 3 children, pets, roommate seeking for my dad, KC, quizzing, daily household chores (it never ends) - I still have so much to be thankful for and looking for it helps me to see it, to keep it at the front of my mind. Here are my thoughts for today:

Monday is over!

Cooperation at the dentist office - by the staff!

Warm brownies with ice cream.

Joy unspeakable.

Forgiveness from my children.

A relationship with my children that gets closer every day.

My amazing, hard working husband.

So many things to be thankful for!

"I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving."
Psalm 69:30

An Attitude of Gratitude Day 15

Standing firm on the old adage of "better late than never," here is my day 15 of my thankfulness lists!:

My new (to me), free washer and dryer from amazing friends who are a blessing in and of themselves. Thanks - you guys are just the best! Now I will have clean clothes!!!

My awesome church.

God Himself - for His protection, mercy, forgiveness when I mess up, love for me even when I am unlovable, guidance, inspiration - I could go on and on. He has been so good to me, I can not tell it all.

Sunday coupons.

Cool nights.

Take time to be thankful today! It makes all the things that go wrong seem not so bad when you view it through the eyes of gratitude for the blessings that are there.

"To the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks unto thee for ever."

An Attitude of Gratitude Day 10

Well, here we are at day 10 heading toward Thanksgiving day. I am not sure if it is just because Thanksgiving is coming, but there is so much talk going on these days about not just bringing our needs to God - but to bring ourselves to Him, to worship Him, not for what He does for us, but just for who He is. Sometimes, it is so easy to get caught up in the woes of life and all that we need that we forget to just stand back and take the time to see our blessings and then acknowledge the blessing giver. I guess that is the root of why I am doing this for this month. I just want to get back to remembering and seeing the little, every day blessings that tend to get lost in the shuffle of my hectic life. I am so thankful that some of you have joined me each day in the comments!!! That is going to start off my blessings for today:

Friends who are blessed and thankful!

All things are possible for God.

Free shipping.

A productive day at home.

Christmas songs.

I know my Redeemer lives.

Iced coffee.

Peace in the midst of the storm.

Laughing with my children.

My amazing husband.

Choir.

Sins that are forgiven.

Safety, protection and guidance.

Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ,
2 Corinthians 2:14a

An Attitude of Gratitude Day 9

Today I am so especially thankful that Mondays only come once a week! Here's how my week started - Somehow, I misunderstood the date for the kids dentist appointments and thought we had to be there by 8 AM today. We were there with time to spare, only to find out that the appointment was not for today - it is for next Monday! Oh, dear! In spite of that, I still have so much to be thankful for today, so here goes...

Knowledge that God works all things for my good.

A full day of school work done.

The library - free DVD rentals are awesome!

Friends who know me as I am but love me anyway!

Blessings of all sizes, shapes and colors.

My relationship with Jesus - without Him, I am nothing.

Ice cream.

Deep conversations with my husband and children - such fun!

That I may be in this world, but I am NOT of it!

The 95 year old man who bagged my groceries at Publix today - he was so sweet and lively that he blessed my day.

"That I may publish with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wondrous works."
Psalm 26:7
